This summer, SCA and NatureBridge are teaming up to offer positions on two crews that will experience a one-of-a-kind combination: conservation and marine science. Enjoy three weeks on the coast (Crew 1 from 7/1 to 7/20/2018, Crew 2 from 7/29 to 8/17/2018) sleeping under the stars in the Pacific Northwest at Olympic National Park in Washington. You’ll hike 5-10 miles each day over varied terrain (including rocky and sandy beaches), carrying everything you need in a large backpack. You and your team will also learn basic backpacking and wilderness skills, develop a deeper understanding of marine ecology and natural history, and forge lifelong friendships.

  • Dates: July 29 to August 17 (3 weeks)
  • Pre-requisites: Successful backpacking experience; ability to hike 3 to 10 miles per day on sandy beach terrain
  • Application Code: PO-00725511
  • Boys: 4 spots remaining
  • Girls: 4 spots remaining
  • The SCA – NatureBridge Marine Science Exploration Crew is focused on Leadership, Service, and Scientific Research. While participating on this crew, members can expect to challenge themselves physically and mentally by navigating rugged coastline, monitoring and removing marine debris on foot, and applying scientific methods to research questions inspired by the unique coastal ecosystem within Olympic National Park. Days will be long and rewarding, and participants could experience anywhere between 3 to 10 miles of arduous coastal backpacking and should expect to pack gear and food to a new campsite every day. Since the crew may encounter inclement weather throughout the trip, an alternative packing list will be provided. This program will be great for a budding scientist and help participants take steps towards being leaders in the conservation field.

  • Cost $3,000 per participant
  • Include 8 to 10 high school aged members per crew
  • Duration 3 to 5 weeks in the summer

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Is 15 to 18 years old on the start date of the crew
