ROCKY MOUNTAIN YOUTH CORPS

Position:  Youth Programs Assistant Crew Leader

Location:  Office in Steamboat Springs, CO – Crews will serve in Routt County and NW Colorado

Crews:

  • Yampa Valley Service Learning Crew (SLC) – participants age 11-13
    Yampa Valley Community Development Crew (CDC) – participants age 14-15
  • Regional Service Crew (RSC) – participants age 16-18
  • Regional SLC & CDC – participants ages 10-16 (various communities across NW Colorado)

 

Session Dates:

  • SLC tentative program dates May 23th – August 18th
  • CDC tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th
  • RSC tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th
  • YEP tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th

All Youth Programs OFF June 30th – 4th

Youth Programs Rendezvous/Mid-season training July 5th-8th

Stipend:   Weekly living stipend of $433

AmeriCorps Benefits:

CDC & RSC – $1493 AmeriCorps Education Award (450 hour term)

(Upon successful completion of the season)

Plus:  Food while camping with crew, transportation, opportunity to receive a Wilderness First Aid Certification, additional recreational and educational opportunities
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and serve alongside of a crew of 8-16 crew members (depending on which crew) in all day-to-day activities, on the project site and around camp
  • Support the physical and emotional wellbeing of the crew members
  • Participate in RMYC Crew Leader training, field training and mid-session training (Youth Programs Rendezvous) and post session de-rigging/inventory and debriefing
  • Assist with transporting crew safely in RMYC’s 12/15-passenger vans or other vehicles
  • Assist with daily and weekly documentation of crew service and activities, time spent serving, assist with mid-season and end of season evaluations, etc.
  • Assist with overseeing base camp operations including camp set-up, vehicle maintenance, camp hygiene and all other elements involved with adherence to RMYC policy
  • Assist Crew Leader with project logistics
  • Report regularly to Crew Leader, Field Coordinator and Program Manager
  • Co-facilitate Seed Curriculum/Evidence Based curriculum – required educational activities
  • Co-facilitate weekly or weekend recreational opportunities in conjunction with daily schedule
  • Perform duties expected of any corps member including trail/service, meal preparation, cleanup/setup, and other day-to-day duties
  • Conduct routine vehicle/driver, camp and project safety audits to uphold the RMYC risk management program
  • Adhere to and enforce rules and regulations as specified in the RMYC Employee Guidelines Handbook

Materials & Equipment:

Each Leader is responsible for their service and personal clothes, leather boots, gloves, and personal camping equipment. RMYC will provide staff with crew T-shirts to be worn as a uniform. The crew leaders should role model preparedness every day by keeping a daypack with various essentials including but not limited to change of clothes, water, sunblock, hat, sunglasses, and program supplies as needed. RMYC will coordinate with project partners to ensure that basic tools needed for the program are provided for each project. Group food for camping, group camping gear and other supplies will be provided by RMYC. When not camping food is not provided.

Qualifications:

We are seeking staff who can balance creating a fun/enjoyable experience for the youth while also maintaining a structured and supportive program to meet the program goals. A positive attitude, a flexible mindset, and an ability to adapt to daily schedule changes are key attributes of a successful leader. Crew leaders will have significant experience and leadership qualities including:

  • Must be 21 years old – insurance policy for driving
  • Leadership experience with youth age 10-18 is preferred
  • Conservation/Youth Corps experience preferred
  • Ability to camp and live in a variety of weather conditions
  • Physical ability to be on your feet and serve outside for 8-10 hours a day
  • Familiarity with basic conservation and camping skills, including leave no trace practices
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to live independently but also collectively, self-motivated, confident, flexible, and open-minded
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate in a written and oral manner
  • Appropriate risk management skills
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) preferred
  • Good driving record (Crew leaders must provide driving reports from DMV)
  • High School diploma or GED required – relevant Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Pre-service background screening required including FBI background check
  • Must be able to provide proof of eligibility in the United States

The Assistant Leader position is classified as Temporary Regular Exempt and is a seasonal position.

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps engages young people in the outdoors, inspiring them to use their strengths and potential to lead healthy, productive lives. We teach responsibility for self, community and environment through teamwork, service and experiential education.
Being part of an RMYC crew involves spending a season living and working with a team of 8-10 people and completing meaningful conservation projects throughout northwest Colorado and Wyoming. Corps members live and work together 24/7 in a camping environment, completing priority projects during the week, and exploring the beautiful outdoor spaces of the Rocky Mountains on the weekends. Participation involves hard work in tough conditions, but makes for amazing memories and experiences.
